Default Reinstalling Mapsouce frustration

Hi,
My previous system crashed. I am now trying to reinstall MapSource and CN V8. I have
half a dozen mapsource files, but all ask for a previous version. The first Garmin tech
was unable to help (waited 20 minutes) She transferred me to the software support and the
message indicated a wait of at least 30 minutes.

Does anyone know a way to skip all the obstacles?

Thanks,
Choco

I never did get maps installed on my Garmin. Needed a secret code
to log into the website that also needed another secret code to
allow me to download the secret code that unlocked the maps that
were coded to a secret code in the gps.
Garmin's suggestion was straightforward...buy new maps.

My reaction was to take out my frustration with a BIG hammer...
problem solved...frustration relieved...

You say you have "half a dozen mapsource files"; I'm guessing these
are updates downloaded from Garmin's Web site. They'll only install on
top of an existing MapSource installation.

It sounds like you have CN V8 on DVD; if so, there should be an
installation or setup program on the DVD which will install some
version of MapSource and copy the maps onto your PC. Once you have the
base version of MapSource on your PC, you can apply the latest
MapSource update and be done with it.

Someone posted a procedure for faking out the update process to
install even if there's no existing MapSource installation, probably
in alt.satellite.gps.garmin. Maybe it works.

You'll still have to go through the unlock procedure for the maps
though.

If the file contains waypoints and routes then they should be upward
compatible. If they contain map areas then you would have to reselect
the map area with the new maps in Mapsource. Most of the newer GPS
receivers do not need you to download the maps areas since they are
built-in.

However, if Choco saved his unlock codes (as he should have) in a .unl
file, all he has to do is go to Utilities, Unlock Maps, Next, Retrieve
and reinstall all my unl;ock codes, Next, Reeceive my unlock codes from
a file on a PC, Next, -locate the latest .unl file, and select it...
