Inquiring on behalf of a friend. They want a waterproof GPS with FM
radio. And earphones Where the instructions interrupt the radio.. He seems to think that the prices shoot up when they go waterproof. Does anybody have any suggestions of make/model? (or issues) I think he wants to put it in his trouser or inside jacket pocket too, so it shouldn't be too big. I was thinking maybe if it clips into an enclosure that clips onto the bike handle bar. THen he could keep it on his bike (Which is safest), and he could put it in his pocket if he wants. note- he might want an mp3 player with GPS too. Though perhaps some time in the future.. 'cos im not sure that it's available or even if it is, if reasonably priced yet. TIA |

This can also run TOMTOM, oziexplorer or a number of other GPS-related applications. Some come equipped with FM radio and I'm currently awaiting the release of the "HTC touch pro" which will have integrated FM, GPS and a proper VGA screen. Not the measly QVGA that you find on most pocket PCs. Does 'your friend' ;-) want to use the GPS to track routes that he rides or just use it to follow a predefined route? TOMTOM does not know about specific cycle routes. You can tell it to plan a "Bicycle route" but that only means that it leaves out roads where cyclists are not allowed to ride. In the Netherlands we have online routeplanners especially for cyclists and they can supply a file with a list of waypoints for use with a GPS application such as oziexplorer (and probably others). GPSDash can run on a pocket PC and record a travelled route. This can then be plotted on to a map and/or shared with others. All these applications do tend to drain the battery of a pocket PC so I ride with a SOLDIUS solar panel (www.mysoldius.com) connected to the pocket PC so that it takes a lot longer to fully deplete the power. The solar panel can fit nicely in the transparent map pouch of a handlebar bag. -- Regards, Philip. |

Use what i do, a HTC O2 XDA Orbit!
It will also log all the places you go, and your speed. And of course, its a satnav, mp3, FM radio, video, note taker, calender etc etc etc...... Best buy ever! "Philip Green" wrote in message ... He is not very technical, so a pocket pc with separate GPS unit, is not suitable. He would want something that you just turn on and it works. He isn't looking to spend more than £180. Ideally really = £130 waterproof, FM radio, headphones. I don't want it to be a mobile phone thing. And it should be a 1 unit GPS device. It is for his cycling. note- I actually have a pocket PC with separate GPS unit, in my car. It's great for me, but not for him. |

I don't think you're going to find what you are looking for. Having experience of how a "non-technical" person, in this case my 81 year old mother, can be baffled by the (in my opinion) most straightforward equipment, you would hve to have something custom-built to do just what your friend wants with no other features or functions than switch on and go. She can't work the HUMAX FREEVIEW PVR. She's convinced her cordless phone won't work upstairs because there is no phone socket up there. If she accidentally presses 'analogue' on the TV remote she discovers all the channels above 5 have been taken off the air. I wish you the best of luck looking, though. -- Thanks and regards, Philip. |

He is not anywhere near as untechnical as that. He can browse the web, check/send emails. Don't try to analyse the guy yourself, you don't know him. The requirements are what I mentioned. If you don't know what is good and meets his requirements, because you use a pocket pc, then just leave it. But he is looking for a single unit. With FM Radio. Waterproof. He'd like to be able to put it in his pocket - so not too big. And = 180 quid. Pref = 120 quid. TomTom software on it will do. |

TomTom software on it will do. You have ruled out phones and pocket PCs so the only thing left that runs TomTom is their own hardware. I think the only waterproof unit they do is the Rider, aimed at motorcyclists, no radio and a long way over your budget. Garmin also do motorcycle units which again are beyond your budget. Very few sat navs capable GPS receivers are waterproof other than the motorcycle units and outdoor pursuits units (of which only the expensive units do autorouting like a sat nav). Quite a few units play MP3s but I'm not aware of any non-phone units that have FM radios. Your budget is restricting you to the low end of the market and your spec is aiming at the high end. If there was a wide need for your friends particular requirements things would be different but there isn't. -- Dominic Sexton |

I'm not big on phones, but I guess he could (get the phone unlocked and) put his sim card in there, thus keep his current mobile number and not change phone contracts. Or, he could use his own mobile and not use the "GPS one" for its phone capabilities. thanks |
